When Indian TV producer Gul Khan, best known for producing shows like Qubool Hai and Ishqbaaz, announced in March that she was bringing back the third season of the Star Plus hit Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon fans all over rejoiced. After all, the first season of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon had been a huge success, sweeping major awards in its lifetime. The show, which ran from 2011-2014, made Gul Khan a big name in the industry, and gave its lead actors newfound success. Actors Barun Sobti’s and Sanaya Irani’s portrayal of rich and aggressive Arnav Singh Raizada and cheerful and talkative Khushi Kumari Gupta respectively won everyone’s hearts and the show stayed in the viewers’ head even after its demise.
So naturally when Gul Khan announced Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3, fans immediately thought Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani were teaming again but while Gul had other plans. She had cast Shivani Tomar opposite Sobti. Tomar, 27, was last seen in Colors’ Kasam opposite Ssharad Malhotra, playing the reincarnation version of Kratika Sengar’s character Tanu. After low TRPs and fan protests, Tomar was replaced by Sengar – in just a month!
In her career of six years the Delhi-born actress has been replaced in serials multiple times. In 2014 the actress had bagged Tu Mera Hero opposite Priyanshu Jora, but after months of workshops and ten days of shooting she was replaced by Sonia Balani. Reportedly she had also auditioned for the role of Ovi in Balaji Telefilms’ Pavitra Rishta, but the show went to her friend Shruti Kanwar. Her show Friends: Conditions Apply ended abruptly after a few months because of low TRPs. Another show Hum Aapke Ghar Mein Rehte Hain, in which she played Vibha Chhibber’s granddaughter, too ended within a few months of its big launch.
Last year she and Barun Sobti were roped in for Satya Ki Kiran but after several delays the show never took off. After six years of struggle and several rejections, when she was finalised for IPKKND 3, she was on cloud nine. But her happiness has been short-lived as she’s been trolled left right and centre on social media.
Fans of the first season and Barun-Sanaya have been writing hate messages on her Instagram, Facebook and Twitter ever since she was announced the lead. Most people say she has no talent, is bad looking, and a bad luck. There are petitions and requests online to bring back Sanaya and replace Shivani. Here are some reactions of the audience:
The show is getting bashed not just on Instagram but other social media platforms. Some loyal fans of season 1 have bashed Gul Khan as well.
Audience is asking Shivani to be replaced and Gul to leave her ego and bring back their favourite Sanaya.
There are reports Gul Khan didn’t want Sanaya in the show and didn’t ask for the show.
It’d be interesting to see the fate of the show and whether the production house and channel retain Shivani.
