Vidya Balan: I Am Not A Baby-Making Machine!!!

Actress Vidya Balan is known for her powerful women-centric film roles. She is hailed for running films on her shoulders, portraying powerful feminist characters, and being a survivor in the industry without belonging to any camp or having done any film with any Khan.

Yet some nasty people are always ready to take her down and make her feel less accomplished. At a recent media interaction while promoting her upcoming film, Begum Jaan, Balan was asked about her future as a mother. Is she trying for a baby? When will she have one? Her biological clock is ticking… These were some of the things on the reporters’ minds.

But Vidya gave it back to them.

What is this baby obsession? I’m not a baby-making machine. Anyway, the world population is on a rise. If some people don’t have children, it’s fine”, she said, shutting them all up.

Balan also shared a scene from her wedding day when one of her uncles said: “Next time when I see you (Balan and husband Siddharth Roy Kapur) I should be looking at three faces”. Calling such things serious invasion of privacy the actress firmly says it should matter only to her husband and her and not the world.

Whether Balan,38, wants to be a mother or not should be her right. No woman, however old she be, forced or pressurised to expand her family. Her choices must be respected by all.

We celebrated Women’s Day recently, and media, you glorified the event, emphasising on women empowerment and feminism. But here you are, questioning a woman, calling her childless, and labelling her as a less achiever because she didn’t stretch up her body for nine months. How pathetic can you get in your thinking!

Who gives you any right to invade a couple’s privacy and ask them private questions? Balan and Kapur are both grown ups, and doing extremely well in their respective careers. When they want to expand their family and now they do this, whether it’s through natural process, adoption or scientific medical ways, is their decision. There are bigger things in the world happening that need to be reported and told. Shame on you for running after a woman asking her insensitive questions!
